Cinderella and a Book for the High Priest
I needed to change into my blue robes once arriving at my chambers in the temple, but I wasnât allowed to change on my own. Delia would throw a tantrum whenever I tried. I had to bend and extend my arms as she pulled the robes over me.
At the start, our cooperation was so poor that it would have been a lot faster for me to change on my own, which was reasonably frustrating. But lately it was going pretty smoothly. Maybe Iâm finally learning to act like a rich girl now, I thought while Delia did my hair with lowered eyes.
âIt was even more splendid than I imagined,â she murmured, but I had no idea what she was talking about. I said âWhat?â with clear confusion, and she glared at me with her light-blue eyes narrowed.
âGeez! The picture book you asked me to read first! Youâre the one who said you wanted to hear my thoughts on it, Sister Myne!â
âOh, the picture book. I just wasnât sure what you were talking about for a moment. Thank you for your thoughts. Did you read it all the way to the end? You must have made a lot of progress with your letters.â As far as I knew, Delia was studying on her own and thus learning to read a fair bit slower than Gil. I honestly didnât expect her to finish the whole book so quickly.
â...I had Gil help a little. He showed me the karuta.â
The thought of Delia wanting to read the book so bad that she asked her rival Gil for help made me smile. As I was grinning to myself, Rosina entered the conversation with a somewhat stern expression.
âSister Myne, please finish your discussion post haste so that we may begin our harspiel practice. There is not much time.â
âWhatâs wrong, Rosina? You look a bit tense.â
âThe High Priest has instructed you to perform the second song during your meeting.â Rosinaâs answer explained everything. Of course me playing in front of the High Priest would make her tense.
âI suppose I will need to take practice especially seriously for a bit, then. When is the meeting?â
âAfter lunch,â she replied. The lack of a date made me extremely uncomfortable.
âUm, Rosina. After lunch on what day?â
âToday. The meeting is after lunch today.â
According to Fran, who read the letter sent in reply, the High Priest would soon need to travel to a nearby farming town for the Harvest Festival. He wanted to finish our meeting now while he still had the time. I appreciated the fast assistance, but I wasnât emotionally ready to play the song yet.
âPanicking is not very graceful, Sister Myne. Please take care not to show others the fear in your heart.â
After practicing nonstop like a madwoman until third bell, I went to the High Priestâs room and assisted his paperwork until fourth bell with a completely casual expression, silently signaling to him that I wasnât nervous about playing the song at all.
